HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR ALL NEW FAMILIES High school may initially feel very different for you and your student...but rest assured, when counselors visit the freshmen in their PE classes during the second week of school, all students report that they “like” high school. We organize our support utilizing an alphabetical format... We prefer this method as it allows the counselors to get to know our students over the next four years. As a reminder, students should pace themselves, start with a well balanced program that provides them a strong foundation, reaching for the more difficult classes in their junior and senior year...having hopefully, developed a strong sense of confidence. Even though MVHS may appear very large, our counseling staff would like to reassure families that we are here to work closely with your students. Once school begins in the fall, if your student has any questions or concerns they can come into the counseling office during brunch, or lunch, or after school (on a drop-in basis), or they can sign up to see their counselor by simply signing their name on a clip-board in the counseling office. The following day, their counselor will call in all students who have signed up to see them. Over the years, we have met many college admissions officers who consistently remind counselors that students are more successful in college if they learn (even as early as their freshmen year) how to advocate for themselves. However, with that being said, if you have any questions or concerns, parents may email their student’s teachers (regarding their specific class requirements, student performance on assignments, quizzes, or tests) or their student’s counselor (regarding overall schedule, 4-year course planning, tutors, personal and/or social concerns etc.). FRESHMAN/NEW STUDENT FAQS How many credits do I need for graduation? A student needs 240 credits to graduate (completing six courses a day…periods one-six…for four years). As a reminder, each student will need to complete the following: 4 years of English 3 and one-half years of Social Studies One semester of Health (9th grade) 2 years of Math (including a year of Algebra or Standards Algebra) 2 years of Science (one year of life science and one year of physical science) 2 years of PE And 2 years of: World language (1 year) and/or Vocational Applied Arts (1year) and/or Visual and Performing Arts (1year)
